Hideaway by Gate-To-Nowhere Hideaway by Gate-To-Nowhere
Done with Terragen and Photoshop.

After someone spread it on the web as photograph of a "Sunset at the north pole", this image became quite popular.
It is of course not a photo and it does not show a place anywhere near the terrestrial north pole ;)

Side note: the moon sets in that angle towards the horizon only close to the terrestrial equator. This is because Earth and Moon share the same plane of rotation around the sun.

Because of its viral spreading, the image became "Astronomy Picture Of The Day" at NASA website in June 2006:

It still goes around (2011)

HIDEAWAY! This image has a big spiritual meaning. Sun is like GOD, and Moon is like our Guru the spiritual guide.
God is far away and is like a fire ball which cannot be experienced. But Moon is close to us giving us divine light of calmness, absorbs the extremeness of the Sun. Pour upon us the heavenly love which we experience watching the Moon.
Beautiful work.

Well, I'll be. I wrote a newspaper article about this image when it was being passed around (being a bogus image of the North Pole—for so many reasons). Alas, here's the creator! FYI: NASA debunked it, so you didn't any of the experts.

I, too, faved it from another who claimed to have taken it at the POle.
So I'm faving it here. Because it's awesome ( a term often used on DArt; but here I think it's appropriate )

it's almost a sense of desolation and lonliness, as if once you reach the island there will only be a moon and once you get there you travel an even longer time to the sun...creepy...i like it!

NASA has no connections with this image. This is a bogus image. It is fabricated and was not taken at the North Pole. It has been debunked on numerous science-related websites.

I got this in an email a few days ago with your work below the title... I guess there's no stopping it now! :)

"Sunset at the North Pole
TOO BEAUTIFUL NOT TO SHARE

A scene you will probably never get to see.

This is the sunset at the North Pole with the moon at its closest point.

You also see the sun below the moon. An amazing photo and not one

easily duplicated. You may want to pass it on to others. The Chinese

have a saying: 'When someone shares with you something of value, you

have an obligation to share it with others."

Ohhh, I can't describe it! Your work is SO wonderful, it really, truly is. I just can't stop staring at this, its inspired, and its really no wonder that some hopeful people thought that this could be something from Earth. And if only it were.

Beautifully done. I like the softer range of colors here. Still a vibrant image, but soothing to the eyes. The water is especially well-done here, and catches my eye almost as much as the giant moon in the sky.

I can almost hear 2001's Thus Sprach Zarathustra playing in the background. I hope you've seen the movie, or my reference has fallen flat. ;p

A really beautiful perspective on what a sunrise (or sunset) on another world could be like. :)

This is awesome :) I dont know why it isnt more widely known on deviantart, because what dinesiac says is true, and it being on the NASA website is amazing too. I really like the reflections into the water and the whole feeling of calmness. :+fav:

No, this is Terragen 0.9. There are no displacement shaders there :) Its just water with large waves, using a plug-in and a little bit of mouse-painting :)
